Now that 2024 is underway, we’re taking a look at some of the updates we made to Drawboard Projects over the last year.

A big focus for our team was to help organizations increase oversight and gain more control over the way they coordinate and manage their team and contributors in Drawboard Projects, while also making the markup experience more seamless for all users.

From a new account Admin Portal and enhanced workspace capabilities, to the Markup Library and shareable drawing and document layers, here are some of the features we built recently that are designed to help any team speed up reviews and improve project outcomes.

1. New Markup Layers to help teams work with more clarity on drawings and documents

In December 2023, the Drawboard Projects team released the capability for users to create, work on and share multiple markup layers on drawings and documents.

Available on the iOS and Web applications (and coming to the Windows app in 2024), Markup Layers are like stacked, transparent worksheets on which each user can manage their individual or team’s annotations.

Teams can create, name and manage layers in various ways defined by their specific needs and workflows.

With this feature, teams can manage a layer for each team or project on a drawing, one for plumbing, another for lighting or electrical, one for approved markups and so much more. Flick between each layer to see where each group is at for more project oversight and avoid information clashes & confusion for faster reviews and better project outcomes.

For Growth and Enterprise plan users, the power of the Layers feature is in the ability to control layer visibility; to create layers viewable to specific users. This functionality means that team members can work on their specific components without interfering with, or even seeing, others’ work. This is perfect for keeping the work of different teams separate from each other or having internal markups hidden from clients, for example.

Users can easily hide layers to streamline their view and work on or review specific components with clarity and ease. Focus mode enables users to spotlight any selected layer; reduce distraction and keep focused on the work at hand. Users can also reduce the opacity of the PDF document they’re marking up to make markups stand out even more clearly.

2. We built the capability for users to create blank drawings

In August 2023, the Drawboard Projects team released the ability for users to create blank drawings. Just like drawing on a blank piece of paper, users can create a blank drawing to mark up or draft on. Blank drawings are perfect for team whiteboarding, creating quick drafts, making notes and more. Users can select their paper size, page orientation and start drafting or annotating. Paper sizes include A4, A3, A0, Letter, Tabloid and ArchE.

3. We released the capability for users to move annotations forward and backward

The ability to arrange overlapping annotations was built to help users order annotations correctly. If an inserted picture overlaps a text box, for instance, users can use Arrange to move it behind. Re-order annotations including shapes, ink annotations, callouts and more. Bring them backwards, forwards, to the front or to the back.

Simply right-click any annotation and hover over Arrange to get started. Available on the Web application.

4. We built Personal and Project markup libraries to help users and teams mark up faster

The Drawboard Projects’ Markup Libraries are like storage vaults for markups users want to use over and over again. Add what you need and access it any time, on any drawing or document. With the Personal and Project markup libraries, users can keep every markup they use regularly at their fingertips.

Every user has their own Personal Markup Library and on Growth and Enterprise plans each project also has a shared Project Markup Library available to all project team members.

Users can easily categorize their saved markups including symbols, modular units, product types and more using tags. Sort your saved markups how you want so that you can find what you need, when you need it.

On Growth and Enterprise plans, admins can also transfer saved markups from one project to another with easy export/import functionality.

5. We built an Account Admin portal that gives admins more control over their organization and account

We released a new Account Admin portal in 2023 to help organizations gain a clearer view and more control over how their team collaborates. From the Account Admin portal, Organization Admins can see all workspaces and projects in their account - even the ones they're not invited to - so that they can perform a range of organizational actions. Admins can invite new users to their organization, disable users to revoke access immediately, make another user Admin and more.

6. We made it easier for users to access the projects they’re working on

We enabled users to get quicker access to the projects they’re working on with Recents where recently opened projects can be found and Shared with me where users can find the projects that have been shared with them.

7. We made Workspaces more powerful to help teams manage permissions more easily and access their work faster

Managing access on a project-by-project basis can become increasingly time-consuming as teams grow or change. To help manage access at scale and help teams streamline the way they work, in 2023 we built the capability for teams to control permissions at a workspace level. This functionality is a gamechanger for any organization wanting to manage access across multiple projects in one go.

Teams can easily give the whole team or a client team access to multiple projects in one go, revoke or limit access to multiple projects at once, control the permissions of particular contributors across multiple projects and more.

In addition to this, we also created a simplified view to help users identify their workspaces at a glance and help them to access the work they need more easily. Users can see at a glance which workspaces belong to their organization, which workspace is their Default workspace and which ones have been shared with them by external stakeholders.

We dedicated 2023 to rolling out features designed to help all teams coordinate and collaborate more effectively and mark up on the canvas more seamlessly. Now we’re looking to the year ahead and we’re incredibly excited for what is to come.. so stay tuned!
