The desire to optimize their newly adopted technology led Petroff Architecture to implement Drawboard PDF. The software enabled them to markup drawings and easily interact in real-time, improving their collaborative ability. This resulted in more streamlined workflows that were completed more efficiently, regardless of the physical location of team members.

Petroff Architecture is a boutique architectural practice in Australia with a commitment to collaboratively creating spaces that are inspired by nature, craft, innovation and simplicity. This commitment was influenced by a love of nature and preserving the beauty of nature through clear and conscious design thinking to help clients achieve a more socially and environmentally responsible built environment.

“I’ve always been passionate about emerging technologies and the protection and conservation of our natural world, so using Drawboard PDF has always been a natural fit that allows us to maintain our commitment of not causing unnecessary harm to the environment”.

In 2017, Petroff Architecture made the move to Microsoft Surface Pros and subsequently discovered Drawboard PDF on the Microsoft Store. Petar Petrov, Director and Architect, explains “We were looking for ways that we could optimize our new touchscreens, and the idea of software that would improve our digital collaboration was very appealing”.

The implementation of Drawboard PDF was pretty easy for Petar and his small team, as they were eager to reap the benefits of new ways of working, and the majority of staff are now using the software regularly. “The first people in the team to really embrace Drawboard PDF found it quite an easy transition, due to the relatively easy-to-learn interface. In many studios you’ll find loyal fans of the platforms they started on way back when, but in general we are an adaptive bunch and like to learn new things”.

Streamlined digital collaboration

The arrival of COVID-19  brought huge disruption to the architecture industry, and its traditional in-person collaboration methods. Petar explains “we had no idea what to expect when we went into lockdown at the beginning of 2020. We also couldn’t predict the impact it would have on the construction industry, and what the domino effect would be on the architecture industry”.

The functionality of Drawboard PDF proved to be highly beneficial to Petar and the team. The ability to use Drawboard PDF as a tool to collaborate more effectively online helped to streamline workflows throughout the practice by providing an easy way for teams to access and share work, even when they couldn’t meet in person.

“We’d never been in a position where everyone on the team was working remotely, so it was important to look at how we could utilize our software solutions to support remote collaboration. Drawboard PDF enabled us to keep our workflows simple, transparent and efficient during a time when we were all working from different locations”.

The flexibility of the software meant all team members could markup drawings from any device and any location, and even share these files with non Drawboard users through a secure weblink. “Remote working has really reinforced how important it is for everyone to access information from anywhere, easily share it within the team as well as externally, and collaborate regardless of location”.

Choosing and implementing the right collaborative tools was very important to Petar, as they provided value throughout the entire architectural process. “Drawboard PDF is primarily used for viewing and annotating drawings that have already been produced. But on some occasions, it has been used earlier in our workflow for low-fidelity ideas drafting”.

Petroff Architecture is a boutique practice specialising in design technology and residential architecture.

Saving time for increasing productivity

The implementation of Drawboard PDF has provided numerous benefits for Petroff Architecture. With a new feature on Drawboard PDF, Store+Share, teams now have the ability to annotate PDFs in the Drawboard PDF cloud in real time, which facilitates more effective collaboration, and improves productivity as a result.

“The adoption in our studio of Drawboard PDF has steadily increased over time. As new members join the practice they are generally happy to adopt Drawboard PDF as a new tool. When our small team is on the same set of platforms, it makes collaboration so much easier”.

As Petar and his team are able to organize and share documents easily, Drawboard’s functionality has saved considerable amounts of time and resources in the practice. He is looking forward to seeing the impact this software continues to have on productivity in the future.

“The potential for saving time in our workflow is really exciting. Most of that will come from document handling and organisation. If we can now have all PDFs saved in one place with excellent search, and only be a click or two away from a collaborative or sharing/demo space then that's a big win for us. The saving is minutes, but over the course of a year we would all be happy with the amount of time it has freed up”.
