An increased focus on sustainability and the desire to manage projects from an easily accessible place led LGA Architecture to implement Drawboard Projects. The software significantly reduced printing levels, streamlined a range of review scenarios, and enabled a more interactive and cohesive design process.
Drawboard

Founded in 1986, LGA Architecture is a 20 person firm with a focus on community, collaboration and sustainability. Principal Lance Kirk has a strong interest in new technologies and ways of thinking that help to create holistic systems for better built environments. “For the last 5 or 6 years we’ve really been honing in on our sustainability agenda: carbon reduction, net-zero energy, water conservation, those areas that are really important."

LGA Architecture strives to create places where people can attach meanings and emotions to the physical attributes of their environment.

The environmental implications of hard copy workflows, along with the desire to manage projects from a central location, meant Lance and the team chose to introduce Drawboard Projects in early 2020.

“Printing is just so wasteful. I would have stacks of paper a foot high on my desk, and I realised there had to be another way. We also had to manage people having access to projects and needing to split them apart. I met someone from Drawboard at an event, they did a demo, and for me it’s been a journey of educating my colleagues on how this software can benefit our company.”

“When workflows are digital they’re more accessible to more people. Collaboration becomes so much easier as everyone can markup a project, manage and track it. It became the best way to work, we quickly learned that.”

A new way of working

With strong support during the initial implementation, the number of Drawboard users at LGA Architects went from a small handful to almost the entire company. “It’s pretty intuitive, it doesn't take a whole lot for most people to get up and running which is another great benefit of Drawboard.”

A key change in company devices helped ease the transition to digital workflows.

“It was important to get out of the mindset that it’s in a computer and we need to use a mouse to make edit, notes and comments, so we started to buy iPads with Apple Pencils and that became more natural for people, feeling like you are drawing and providing comments by hand on a piece of paper was the turning point.”

Standardizing company processes by using a single markup software also helped the uptake of Drawboard Projects. “We have everything in one place instead of multiple resources. This, coupled with the fact that the majority of the team is using it, helped move people along.”

One software solution for a range of applications

Drawboard Project’s live workspace environment has been utilized throughout all stages of the design process at LGA Architecture. “We put schematic design through construction documents and the iterations in between those on Drawboard Projects. Once we hit a milestone on any project, we’ll put it up for people to review.”

Storing all design work in a single location increases clarity and accessibility for the team, while reducing the likelihood of any miscommunication.

“We use it as a database as well so the projects are in there, up to date, and anybody can see what other projects are available for viewing. We’ve been making it a part of our workflow - once we put a project on Drawboard Projects everyone gets invited.”

The versatility of Drawboard Projects resulted in its adoption by the marketing department when producing their collateral. “We’ve published digital books of our projects; we put them on Drawboard Projects and everybody could mark them up, move things around and make comments. We upload all kinds of documents and graphics; if you want multiple people to review it, it’s a great tool to use.”

A further application of Drawboard’s functionality was centralizing the storage of company information, allowing easier access for the team. “We have a full detail library on Drawboad which any team can look through and review details for  their projects.”

The LGA Architecture team have experienced marked time savings, as well as reductions in printing and busywork. Lance is very satisfied with the benefits Drawboard Projects has brought, and the more streamlined workflows that the firm now enjoy.

“I see a lot less paper being printed, and I know things get done a lot more quickly. Teams upload work instead of waiting to get it printed and organized. I hear people say they went in and reviewed things already, previously that would have taken multiple days or longer".
