Splitting a PDF doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you’re a project manager needing to separate out specific blueprint pages, a legal professional extracting individual contract clauses, or a student isolating key chapters for sharing and reference, Drawboard PDF's Extract Tool makes it intuitive.

This guide walks you through the exact steps to extract one or more pages from any PDF using the built-in Doc Builder. By the end, you'll have a new file with just the pages you need, without affecting your original document.

A step-by-step guide to splitting a PDF with the Extract Tool

Splitting a PDF with Drawboard is straightforward: open your document, choose the pages you want to separate, and export them as a new file. You can also choose whether to keep or remove those pages from the original document.

Below, you'll find each step broken down clearly, whether you’re using Drawboard PDF on Windows, iOS, Mac, or Web. Let’s get started.

1. Open the Doc Builder

From the Drawboard PDF app, navigate to the top-left-corner of the screen and click or tap the icon that looks like a paper and wrench. This will open the Drawboard Doc Builder interface, which allows you to visually manage your files and pages—including extraction.

2. Upload the PDF you want to split

Start by uploading the PDF you want to extract pages from. You can choose to drag and drop files from your file explorer into the Document Builder, or click or tap ‘Add files’ to open your files without dragging.

After upload, you should see color-coded thumbnails for each of the PDFs you added.

3. Select pages to extract

Once you’ve added all your PDFs, you can begin selecting the pages you want to extract.

First, click the ‘<>’ icon to expand a file so it shows each individual page. Each file should have its own color and each page its own number to help you stay organized.

You can then:

  • Select the pages individually by tapping them (touchscreen) or holding down Ctrl and clicking each page
  • Choose a range of pages by tapping or clicking the first page, then holding down the Shift key (PC) or using the “Multi-Select” toggle (touchscreen) to mark the final page in the range

Before proceeding, double-check your selections to avoid file issues down the road.

4. Extract the pages you selected

Once you have the thumbnails of the pages you wish to extract highlighted, look for the “Extract” button towards the top of the Doc Builder panel.

Clicking or tapping “Extract” will prompt you to confirm your extractions and save them as their own file.

5. Finalize your PDF

Once the extraction is done, you can delete the still-selected files by clicking the trash can on the top of the Document Builder interface. Afterwards, check your existing PDF and the newly saved PDF to check for accuracy. Make sure that no pages are missing and that the order of the extracted pages aligns with your needs.

If you spot any discrepancies—say a missing page or a page included by mistake—return to the original PDF and repeat the extraction process. Because the original PDF remains intact if you choose not to remove pages, you can easily correct issues without losing information.

Wrap Up: Extract with Precision, Work with Confidence

With just a few clicks, the Extract Tool in Drawboard PDF helps you isolate exactly the pages you need—no clutter, no complications. Whether you're preparing documents for review, study, or collaboration, splitting a PDF is now part of a streamlined, professional workflow.
