In their 5,400sqm facility at Arundel on the Gold Coast, Stacked Farm can produce perfect-looking leafy greens all year round.
Edith Kamberaj

Not far from the farmlands known as Australia’s salad bowl, rows of fruit and vegetables are being cultivated without sunlight or soil.

In their 5,400sqm facility at Arundel on the Gold Coast, Stacked Farm can produce perfect-looking leafy greens all year round. Started in 2017, Stacked Farm is a Queensland AgTech start-up for indoor vertical farming.

Vertical Farming refers to indoor farming in controlled environments, usually in the absence of soil and natural light, and involves well-established horticultural techniques. Stacked Farm, for instance, uses a form of hydroponics, growing its plants in rockwool, a material similar to an insulation batt, while a channel of water flows underneath.

The technology is created and optimized to produce only the best quality healthy food that gets the tick of approval from consumers for taste, nutrition and price point, outperforming traditional farming in each one of these attributes.

Stacked Farm aims to optimize efficiency, minimize environmental impact, and ensure sustainable farming practices. In other words Stacked Farm is at the apex of Agri-food innovation.

With a dedicated team committed to researching, understanding, and improving all elements of indoor vertical farming, Stacked Farm needed Software to help facilitate communication, collaborations, and operational efficiency. That’s where Drawboard Projects comes in, designed to support better processes, greater innovation and business growth.

The Problem

Stacked Farm found itself moving ahead of its own industry - lets call it Industry 3.0. Industry 3.0 is the application of fully automated systems throughout business processes.

They were ready to move beyond this stage and into Industry 4.0, which is the digitization of all forms of data so that processes and teams can move quickly through feedback, more thoroughly analyze outputs, and increase efficiencies.

There were three clear problems that Stacked Farm needed to solve for better processes,

1. A highly technical team of technicians and engineers needed a single source of truth for all drawings and schematics, which also had to have decent access control for sharing, internally and externally.

2. A better way to receive feedback on drawings and markups from the Stacked Farm assembly team.

3. A way to go paperless without losing the advantages of using paper markups.

Staff and admins needed clear, useful information that’s readily on hand and easy to navigate – exactly what Drawboard Projects was engineered to deliver.\

“Where possible the go-to method undeniably needs to be more digital.”

The Solution

Stacked Farm needed a system that addresses the challenges and problems that was also simple to use with a great UI.  Without simplicity, it would require too much training and be a constant overhead.

Access control was also an important focus, particularly for external sharing.Drawboard Projects offered solutions to their problems and was delivered in a way that meets all of Stacked Farm’s requirements.

What were the main drawcards?

Easily move markups from older versions to your current revision, and get full clarity on revisions to reduce the need to rework and keep your project moving forward.

Auto versioning means that users never work on outdated versions. Newly published revisions are automatically pushed to all project members.

4. Single source of truth for all drawings

Store, mark up and review technical drawings and easily manage all of your drawings and projects from one centralized location. Manage unlimited projects in one place and keep all stakeholders on the same page to get reviews completed faster.

6. Powerful annotation and Markup tools

Insert images from your camera or computer, add text, and draw or insert lines and shapes with ease.Make your markups your own by easily customizing all your draw tools by color, thickness, opacity, size arrangement and order.

Work with advanced technical tools that allow precise measurement and calibration. See all your markups and actions as they happen with real-time sync, and share visibility of all or selective markups with internal and external stakeholders.

The Implementation

Drawboard Projects and Stacked Farm worked together to run induction sessions with the different departments, with a dedicated account representative available at any time to answer questions during implementation.

Our Drawboard Projects Solutions Expert also ran several conferences for further inductions and skill bridging sessions as needed. Because Drawboard Projects was designed to turn beginners into experts most of the platform learning happens innately while using the platform.

The Verdict

"Engineers love it” says Newbold (CTO). “They like the upload process and saw it as a time saver by reducing the need to file manage. Marking up drawings in Drawboard Projects became the de facto method of marking up issues”.

“The only shortfall experience so far has been the lack of printing functionality or UX on that functionality”. At Drawboard Projects we’re dedicated to making sure we deliver end-to-end solutions, and even though our ethos is to move to a paperless world – delivering on all requirements is important to us. This is a big driver for the Drawboard Projects Product team to look to deliver a better UX for Printing.

The Result

Drawboard Projects was designed to get everyone on the same page, move projects forward, and provide a canvas and workspace that is easy, powerful and intuitive to use.Newbold says that implementing Drawboard Projects “has increased productivity and simplified feedback loops between our different departments”.

The Future

Having adopted Drawboard Projects throughout various processes for their Engineers and Assembly Managers, Stacked Farm expressed that they would like to integrate Drawboard Projects deeper into some of their existing systems.

- Integrate the Issues feature on Drawboard Projects into their ERP system

- Syncing the Drawboard Issues feature with the Issues list Stacked Farm use on their ERP system

- Utilize Zapier with Drawboard Projects
